Amazon Games’ latest MMO, New World, which has been years in the making is now finally available on Steam. It involves building forts, factions settlements, and creating your own paradise on an island.
The game also features some incredible multiplayer content, letting you invade forts held by other players and take control over their territory. You also need to defend your holdings from a wave of monsters. Here is everything you need to know about it before delving into the game.
Do you need to subscribe to the New World?
No, you don’t need a subscription to play New World. You just need to make a one-time purchase of $40 for the standard edition. There may be other things you can spend your money on in the future. There is an in-game store that can be accessed for purchasing home décor, skins, and pets.
How many players can be on the New World server at a time?
A single server can currently support 2,000 players at a time. However, due to the long queues that the server is facing after the release, Amazon has included additional servers in many regions and is also planning to increase the server cap to accommodate over 2,000 players in New World.
Though Amazon Games hasn’t mentioned what the new server cap would it, it will be revealed anytime soon.
What kind of MMO is New World?
Though the game has a territory control element, it is purely player-driven. If you wish to, you can spend all of your time fighting monsters, leveling up, and crafting new gear. You can group with other players to take on world events. Explore new things, new areas, create new stuff, and locate new resources in the game.
You can turn to the PvP flag if you want to fight other players in the open world. If you are killed by a player from another faction, you lose some equipment durability. If you win, you are rewarded with extra experience points.
What are the different modes in the game?
There are a variety of different game modes a player can try in Aeternum. Here is a summary of each of the game modes.
- War mode – This huge one-hundred player PvP mode sees your faction defend or attack a fort to determine the fate of a territory.
- Expeditions – This mode sees you and your friends build a balanced party to defeat bosses and solving puzzles together.
- Invasion – The mode requires the players to defend their fort from invasion from enemies and from the mighty Void Destroyer. If you survive for 30 minutes in the game then you are a winner, else your territory gets downgraded.
The story of New World
In the story of Amazon’s New World, you end up getting washed up on an island of Aeternum which contains veins of a magical mineral called Azoth. This mineral has the potential to both corrupt and empower an individual.
You wander on this lost island of monsters and magic exploring the ruins left behind by the ancient civilization, natural creatures, corrupted settlers, and others. There is more to this story and there are plenty of secrets to discover.
What about factions?
A player can join three different New World factions at level 10 which lets you become a part of a company and fight in faction wars and events. The major ones have been listed below.
- Marauders- a military faction dedicated to turning Aeternum into a free nation
- Covenant – An order of fanatics wanting to cleanse the magical land from heretics. You cannot change your faction once you have chosen it.
- Syndicate – A secretive society looking for enlightenment and hidden lore.
- The Angry Earth – The nature of Aeternum mimicking animals, humans, and others to fight what it sees as an infection on the island.
- The Lost – Doomed to immortality, these ghouls are trapped between life and death.
How do the settlements, forts, and companies work?
If you want to get involved in the social side of Amazon’s New World, then you can find or join a company. These are 100-player groups or guilds which can take over and govern territories. These companies are affiliated with one of the three major game factions.
The entire setting in this game is divided into territories that further branch out into settlements. There are several player-hubs for crafting quests, buying houses, inns, and more. Each territory comprises a fort and is governed by a company that claims it.
The fort can be controlled by another company but they need to first declare a war to have their influence over a particular territory. Though the setup comes across as complex, you need to fulfill certain criteria to declare war. You cannot steal forts back from each other.
Is New World all about magic?
Yes, but magic in the game is linked to the use of different kinds of weapons. There are life staff and fire staff. Each has two separate skill trees that permit you to specialize in a special kind of magic. There are also ice gauntlets that let you use ice-based magic.
